Avi Yehuda, the winemaker, grower, and owner of the Yehuda Winery, says that as a child (growing up on Vineyard Road in Mevaseret Zion), he dreamt of being a vineyard guide. His family had, throughout its generations, always grew edible grapes, from which they made raisings and sometimes even Kiddush wines. His professional dream came true when he graduated from Mikve Israel, specializing in vineyards and cattle.
At the time, the school had a vineyard, where he learned of the existence of wine beyond Kiddush wines, and spark was lit. Since then and for all time, wine has become for Yehuda a source of love, tradition, and art.
"I share a language with the trees," he says, "I talk to them and they whisper to me. Wine is my creation and its taste runs through me".
Along the years, Avi accumulated a great deal of knowledge through courses and seminars he attended all over Israel and the word, when simultaneously, as he relates, "he word make wine out of almost anything". All there were added to his years of experience as the Neve Ilan Village winemaker, and led him to the decision to establish his own winery.
Indeed, in 1998, he founded the Yehuda Winery. At first he was located at Neve Ilan, and recently the winery has been situated at the entry to Shoresh village, in the heart of the flatland pastoral scenery on one side, and vineyards were planted in Neve Ilan and Shoresh, after the large fire in the area July 1995 where previously plums, walnuts, and cherries had been grown.
His first vintage from 1999 was a dry red wine from a Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot variety, aged for 14-18 months.
The Yehuda Winery makes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Shiraz wines, in a volume that grows by 1000 bottles per year.
