Ein Avdat National Park

Ein Avdat National Park

The Ein Avdat Spring flows where the Zin River leaves the Avdat Plain. Here the river creates an unusual-looking, deep, narrow canyon in the soft white chalk.
The park has a bubbling brook, a waterfall, and pools. Many animals, including ibex, are attracted to the fertile banks with their lush vegetation. The park has limited its visiting hours to minimize the effect of human guests on the resident animals.

The riverbed has a grove of Euphrates poplars, trees often seen in oases and known for their various-shaped leaves.

The trail through the park was designed so as not to damage the landscape. It runs past caves which were inhabited by monks during the Byzantine period.

The complete trail leads from the lower entrance along the river to the upper entrance. On one stretch of the trail, hikers must climb up iron rungs hammered into the rock. A less ambitious option is to walk from the lower entrance to the Ein Marof pools at the foot of the waterfall, return along the same path, and then drive to the upper parking lot.

The national park sells a one-day ticket good for both the upper and lower entrances. Also available is a combined ticket for Ein Avdat National Park, Avdat National Park (site of the former Nabatean city), and a free cup of coffee or tea at Avdat National Park.
