
Greek Orthodox monastery was founded in the 6th century A.D. and is on its way from Jerusalem to Bethlehem.
According to one version, the monastery was built on the site where the Prophet Elias hid from the revenge of Israeli people queen Jezebel.
According to another version, there placed the grave of the Greek Bishop Elias.
The third version, say that in that place is buried St. Elijah, the Egyptian monk who became the patriarch of Jerusalem in the year 494.
It is believed that the Mar Elias helps infertile women and sick children.
